City of Abilene Proposes 2013 Budget

The Abilene City Council will meet Monday and Tuesday at City Hall to determine the budget for fiscal year 2013.

In a press release, Mayor Norm Archibald mentions a number of projects from the 2012 budget that have been successfully completed, including: the Pine Street project, Phase I, running from North 6 to Ambler, the airport's new 145-foot tall control tower, and Nelson Park's new "Splash Pad" which is scheduled to open later this summer.

The City forecasts nominal increases in property values in 2013, with early numbers suggesting that the increase in residential property values may be 1.3 percent. Commercial real estate values are expected to increase by 4.9 percent.

Sales tax, which rose slightly in 2012, is expected to decrease slightly in 2013.

The 2013 budget includes continued financing for several existing projects, as well as financing for the future improvement of city-owned property such the the replacement of playground equipment at several parks around town.
