McCoy Must Realize That Being A Backup Is A Good Job

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It's time for Colt McCoy to accept this reality: No matter where he will play in 2012, it will be as a backup quarterback.
McCoy was unhappy with how the Browns handled the quarterback competition. But he had to understand that the moment the Browns picked 28-year-old Brandon Weeden in the first round, it was Weeden's job to lose.
The fact is Weeden did nothing to cause the Browns coaches to second-guess themselves. There was no need to see McCoy extensively with the first-team offense to realize that Weeden has superior arm strength. He also is the more accurate passer. Weeden certainly is physically stronger.
I saw about five practices in training camp and several more during the minicamps. It wasn't even close -- Weeden has been the better looking QB, period.
Maybe all of that will change once the preseason opens and quarterbacks are being hit. Or perhaps he will unravel when exposed to the brutal defenses in the AFC North. But for now, everything points to the conclusion that Weeden gives the Browns a better chance to win -- and that's why he should start.
