AISD to Dedicate New Elementary

By: Alisa Hail
Updated: August 10, 2012
The grand opening and dedication of AISD's newest school, Myra P. Martinez Elementary, will be held Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m. at the school's cafeteria at 1250 Merchant St.

Wednesday's ceremony will feature AISD officials and students, in addition to family members of the late Myra Payne Martinez, who spent most of her career teaching bilingual and special education children from the neighborhoods that will attend the new school.

Located at the site of the former Franklin Middle School, Martinez Elementary will serve the combined student populations from the campuses of College Heights and Fannin, which were closed at the end of the 2011-12 school year.

Mrs. Martinez taught in AISD from 1995-2002, including five years as a teacher at College Heights and Fannin. She was the Bilingual ESL and Title 1 Consultant at the Region 14 Education Service Center at the time of her death in 2004.

The new school officially opens to students on the first day of the 2012-13 school year, Monday, Aug. 27.

The public is invited to attend the grand opening and dedication. A ribbon cutting ceremony and guided tours will follow the ceremony.
