Updated: August 14, 2012
While the 12-year-old boy who was shot last week in Abilene continues his long road to recovery, the community in Anson is stepping up to help.

Zachary Fernandez's hometown held a bake sale fundraiser Tuesday.

Friends and family gathered to raise money for the boy who was caught in the middle of a drug deal turned violent, and was shot in the head.

He's described as playful, strong and always smiling, and the community is happy to help in any way they can.

All of the money raised will go toward helping with medical bills for Zachary and school supplies for his little brother.

The 8-year-old is staying with family through CPS while his mother is in the hospital with Zachary.
