"It's a free community service. We do it once a month because we want to educate people about what bullying is and why it happens," explains Team Chip Tae Kwon Do owner, Chip Townsend.
This month, the self-defense class is Friday, August 24th at the Team Chip location in Abilene. It starts around 5:30pm. Despite what you may think, Townsend isn't encouraging a physical response for those being bullied. His solution is much more than that.
"A lot of times when you think of bullying you think of standing up and punching the big guy that's pushing you around," Chip explains, "when in reality a lot of bullying can just be avoided."
While Townsend's self defense class does teach basic moves to protect yourself, the message behind it attempts to get to the root of the issue.
"It's about life," he says, "it's about a lifestyle. It's about living to be an asset to your society."
He adds, "if we can teach kids to believe in themselves enough to realize that they have the right to be there... that's huge!"
Over the past two decades Team Chip has turned out over 30 World Championships from their Martial Arts Program.
"We are a great martial arts program," Townsend says, "but at the same time we're teaching these kids don't go out there and use that the wrong way."
In fact, Townsend's program teaches students to not only look out for themselves, but for their peers as well.
