"I passed by this morning and it was $3.48, and I thought well, I'm gonna go to the bank. I came back by, it was $3.52," says Abilene resident Pam McCombs.

Gas prices are beginning to climb in what seems like the blink of an eye

"I've seen em as high as $3.89," says Ray Morrell.

As those numbers go up so do the amount of gas drive-offs from those trying to beat the pain at the pump.

"He told me he was going to fill up. He showed me the cash he had for it," Says Michael Luna.

This Shell station was hit Monday morning by a customer the attendant recognized.

"A crowd of people came in, and when I looked up at the pump I noticed there was sixty dollars on the register and he had drove off already," Says Luna. "And so that's when we called the police".

This prepay station requires all drivers to leave an i-d while they pump if paying in cash.
Even that isn't preventing some gas theft.

"You don't think of it because they're you're regular customers," Luna said. "But again, those are the ones you really have to watch out for."

Still, there are plenty of drivers who grin and bear it. Shelling out a few extra bucks to fill up, and driving a few less miles per day.

"I mean I hate it, but whenever I come to town I have a list of things that I'm gonna do," Explains McCombs. "So I don't come to town just for a coke anymore"
