The Abilene High Eagles entered their open date with at least a share of the District 2-5A championship  in hand.

They exit the open date with the outright title in hand thanks to Permian's victory over Midland Lee.

The bye week is supposed to be a week for teams to rest and work on the fundamentals, and head coach Steve Warren says that is exactly what they did last week.

Coach Warren said, "Our biggest plan was to get them some mental rest. We got out of the film room. We got away from the chalk board and all that stuff for a week. We went through a regular routine practice wise and tried to stay in that routine on purpose. We got a lot accomplished during the week. I guess maybe our work during the bye week was rewarded a little bit by winning the outright district championship, and we didn't even play a game. It was pretty sweet by the time the week ended."

The Eagles finish up the regular season on Friday at home against Midland High. The Eagles are the district champs. Midland is still in the running for the 4th and final playoff berth from the district.
