APD: Diligent Employee Helps Police Capture Thief

Tuesday evening at about 6:55, Officers Jacob Weise and John Lopez responded to a theft call at a business in the 4300 block of Southwest Drive. APD Dispatch had been notified by a loss prevention employee that a theft had occurred and that the male suspect had fled on foot. The employee explained that he had recovered the stolen merchandise from the suspect prior to the suspect fleeing and provided the suspect's description. The store employee maintained visual contact of the suspect as he fled and maintained telephone contact with Dispatch. Officers located the suspect in the 4100 block of Southwest Drive. The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had left the store without paying for merchandise. Approximately $181.00 of stolen merchandise was recovered. A records check revealed that the suspect had prior theft convictions. The suspect was arrested on an enhanced felony theft charge due to previous convictions. The suspect was warned not to return to the store.

Wednesday morning at about 1:35, Officer Brian Poynor responded to a burglary call at a residence in the 600 block of Clinton Street. APD Dispatch had been notified by a resident that a large TV was taken from her residence. Office Poynor's investigation revealed that there were two residents that lived at the address and that the front door had been kicked in by an unknown suspect. The investigation also revealed that a laptop computer had been stolen. Property stolen is valued at approximately $1,800.00. A report for burglary of habitation was taken and this investigation continues.

Wednesday morning at about 1:55, Officer Jeremy Nell contacted a motorist in the 200 block of North 13 Street for a traffic violation. A K-9 officer assisted on the traffic stop. Officer Nell contacted the male driver and sole occupant in the vehicle. During this investigation, the K-9 alerted on the vehicle for the presence of narcotics. During a search of the vehicle, a small quantity of a white substance was located on the floor next to the driver's seat. The white substance tested positive for cocaine. The driver was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance (cocaine).
