Chief Stan Standridge proposed the plan at Thursday morning's city council meeting which is modeled after a similar program in San Angelo.
The more than $96,000 purchase for one 111 semi-automatic rifles will be fronted by the city.
However, over the course of one year, the cost will be paid back by individual officers via payroll deduction over 24 bi-weekly periods.
That means the officers will own their own rifles.
The chief wants to stress that his department has been working on this plan for more than a year now and it is in no way a result of last week's Connecticut school shooting.
