City of Abilene to Purchase New Rifles for APD

The City of Abilene is purchasing new rifles for Abilene police officers, but those officers are paying the city back.

Chief Stan Standridge proposed the plan at Thursday morning's city council meeting which is modeled after a similar program in San Angelo.

The more than $96,000 purchase for one 111 semi-automatic rifles will be fronted by the city.

However, over the course of one year, the cost will be paid back by individual officers via payroll deduction over 24 bi-weekly periods.

That means the officers will own their own rifles.

The chief wants to stress that his department has been working on this plan for more than a year now and it is in no way a result of last week's Connecticut school shooting.
