APD, DPS Cracking Down on Drunk Driving

Law enforcement officials will be out in full force New Years Eve, beefing up patrols to crack down on drunk driving.

Abilene police and the Texas Department of Public Safety both plan to have more officers out on the roads, especially in high-traffic areas.

Two-thirds of DWI convictions are first-time offenders, and besides going on your record, it's a crime that comes at a very high cost.

"In Texas, it's $17,000 for a first time DWI," says Sparky Dean, Department of Public Services, "and that doesn't guarantee that you wouldn't have a conviction for DWI, That's just to go through the process."

Dean says the best way to avoid any incidents is to assign a designated driver *before* going out, or call a cab.
