The Merkel Lady Badgers are still the top ranked basketball team in Class 2A with a perfect 28-0 record.

You might think that would be an indication that a trip to the state tournament is just a formality, but they are 1 of 4 teams from the Big Country ranked in the top 16 in Class 2A.

It's a good indication of just how good the Class 2A basketball is in this area.

Head coach Clay Barnett said, "In our area, the Big Country area, you're going to pick up somebody that's very good very soon. We know once the playoffs start, we've got to be playing our best basketball, or we'll be going home.

Allison Szabo added, "A lot of those team, and we haven't played them yet this year, but they were good last year, and they are good this year. You just have to be ready to play those teams because you know they're going to come out and be ready to beat you especially when you are all ranked that high. Everybody wants to beat each other and get higher in the rankings."

The Merkel boys and girls are back in action Tuesday night. They are set to host Dublin. The games begin at 6:30pm and 8pm.
