Cowgirls Beat Schreiner In Double Overtime

 ABILENE, Texas  - Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team received a basket from Alexis Popelar with 5.9 seconds in double overtime to beat Schreiner 76-75 in double overtime in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex.
 
After trailing 30-26 at halftime, HSU took the lead at 33-32 on a Jaclyn von der Heide free throw. HSU never trailed the rest of the half and took a 56-48 lead on an Alicia Finn jumper with 2:12 to play. However, Schreiner scored the final eight points and Katie Isom sent the game into overtime with a layup with :01 remaining in regulation.
 
In the first overtime, HSU scored the first five points to take a 61-56 lead, but Schreiner answered with seven straight points and took the lead 63-61 with :59 to play on a Bailey Harris 3-pointer. Alexis Popelar then hit a pair of free throws to tie the game with 5.2 seconds remaining.
 
In the second over time, the teams traded baskets and it was tied at 67 and HSU took the lead at 70-67 on a Finn 3-point play with 2:58 to play. Harris retied the game with a 3-pointer 15 seconds later and Rachel Holik hit a layup. Harris had the answer again with a 3-pointer. After an HSU turnover Lindsey Peterson hit a layup with 1:04 to play to make it 75-72.
 
HSU then put the ball in the hands of Popelar who drove and was fouled to make it 75-74 with :50 to play. HSU then forced a miss by Brooke Sanders and Finn rebounded. HSU spread the floor and let Popelar go to work and she scored a layup to give the Cowgirls the lead and then Joanna Daniel stole the Schreiner inbounds pass to seal the game. 
 
Popelar finished the night with 25 points, 13 rebounds and six assists and played all 50 minutes. Daniel also played all 50 minutes and added 10 points and seven assists. Finn had a career-best 15 points off the bench and Holik added 10 points.
 
Peterson led Schreiner with 26 points and Harris added 17 points and six assists.
 
HSU shot 48 percent in the game and outrebounded the Mountaineers 36-32. HSU was also 21-for-21 at the free throw line. Schreiner went 15-for-26 at the free throw line.
 
HSU is now 10-8 overall and 8-4 in ASC play. Schreiner fell to 7-13 overall and 3-11 in league play. The Cowgirls continue their home stand on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Texas Lutheran.
 
The game against Schreiner was the last-ever at the Mabee Complex as the Mountaineers are leaving the ASC after this season.
