ACU Crash Victim Undergoes Surgery for Injuries

The ACU Optimist reports that one of the ACU students injured in the Potosi Road and HWY 36 accident on Friday, January 25, underwent surgery for her injuries.

Early Friday morning, Rebekah Cherniss underwent an operation on her back and jaw at Hendrick Medical Center.

According to The Optimist, Cherniss was in fair condition as of this past Tuesday, but still needed an operation on her L4 and L5 vertebrae. Surgeons used a bone graft to fuse them together.

Surgeons also placed a plate in Cherniss's jaw near her wisdom teeth, helping rebuild skull damage received during the accident.

Deanna Romero, also injured in the accident and a fellow student at ACU, is reported to be in good condition, but remains in the hospital at this time.

Cherniss's parents have told The Optimist that she seems to be recovering well and her doctors expect, if everything goes as planned, she will be out of the hospital in three to four days.
