Locals Learn to be Storm Spotters

People had a chance to learn how to be storm spotters Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service's SKYWARN class taught volunteers how to become storm spotters, and how to identify and provide information for severe weather events.

Volunteers include radio operators, law enforcement, firefighters and media to help keep people safe during all types of severe weather.

"It gives us more lee-time for some of these storms that move into the area. And then that allows our friends here in the Abilene and Big Country area to have more of those precious minutes to  take cover if a tornado were approaching," said Hector Guerrero, warning and coordination for the National Weather Service.

There will be more classes held in the Big Country. You can check out the national weather service's website for those dates and times.
