Reminder: TxDOT and Abilene MPO to Host Public Hearing on Frontage Road Projects

By: Press Release
Updated: March 5, 2013
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Abilene Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) will host a public hearing March 5 to discuss upcoming projects to convert two-way frontage roads to one-way operation on US 83/84 and Loop 322.

The hearing will begin at 6 p.m. at the Abilene Zoo Education Center, 2070 Zoo Lane. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

The public is invited to view exhibits and maps of the proposed project from 5:30 p.m. until the hearing starts at 6 p.m.  TxDOT Abilene District and MPO staff will be available to take questions and comments.

The public will have an opportunity to comment orally or in writing at the end of the formal presentation. Comments will also be accepted for 10 days after the hearing. After all comments have been received, TxDOT will respond to each in writing.

The US 83/84 project will convert about 3 miles of frontage roads from Canyon Rock Road to FM 707. Proposed work also includes modifications to a crossover at Iberis Road for safety reasons.

The Loop 322 project plan calls for work along 4 miles of frontage road from Maple Street to SH 36, but current funding allows only the segment from Maple to FM 1750 to be completed as part of this project. If funds allow, some work on the remaining portion may be done in preparation for its eventual completion.

In addition to converting the frontage roads to one-way operation, work would include building turnarounds at major intersections, modifying some ramps and adding a crossover structure at Lytle Creek (pending available funding).

Estimated costs to complete all segments are about $12 million, with $8.121 million currently available. TxDOT and the MPO are each providing about $4 million for the upcoming work. The projects are expected to begin late this year.

Project schematics, the environmental assessment, tentative construction schedule and other information will be available for review and copying at the TxDOT Abilene Area Office located at 1350 North Arnold Blvd., the Abilene District Office located at 4250 North Clack, and the Abilene Metropolitan Planning Organization located at 402 Cypress Street, Suite 519.

Those who are not able to attend the meeting may view the information and can submit comments prior to the hearing date and for 10 days afterward at any of the locations.

For more information about the meeting location and time, please contact Darah Waldrip at (325) 676-6817 or E'Lisa Smetana at (325) 437-9999. Anyone who wishes to attend the hearing and may require accommodation for special needs should contact Ms. Waldrip at (325) 676-6817 as soon as possible before the hearing date.
