The president of the labor organization of Texas prison guards is asking the Texas legislature to begin using a new, but still empty, detention center in Anson.

The president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees says state officials should close some other detention centers because of abuse and poor management.

The detention center in Anson was finished in 2010 when Jones County officials say they were assured by state officials that they would house inmates there.

The state backed out of the contract and the new facility has never been used.

The union leader says the state legislature should authorize the Texas Department of Criminial Justice to supervise the operation of the Anson center, and stop the contracts with three centers operated by the Correctional Corporation of America.
