Cowboys Split Doubleheader With Texas-Dallas

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Texas-Dallas on Tuesday afternoon at Hunter Field, winning 2-0 in the first game and falling 3-2 in the nightcap.
 
In the first game, the Cowboys received a great start from Stewart Person. The senior lefthander moved to 1-0 on the year as he worked six shutout innings. He scattered four hits and struck out five. Tyler Brunnemann worked a scoreless seventh inning for his sixth save.
 
The only scoring came in the fifth inning when Jon Finney walked and Marcus Uechi followed with a two-run home run over the left field wall.
 
Andrew Bell led the Cowboys' seven-hit attack with two hits. Four different Comets had one hit each.
 
Brandon Clounch went four shutout innings for UTD and Micah Easterling took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits to fall to 1-1.
 
In the nightcap, pitching was again the name of the game as freshman Brandon Bollinger went five and one-third innings in his first career start and allowed two runs on two hits. Eric Zamora allowed a run on three hits in two-thirds of an innings. Parker Robinson worked two scoreless innings and Ryan Reagor worked a scoreless ninth.
 
UTD received four shutout innings from starter Calvin Campbell. Alex Kuhn (1-1) earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief. Corey allowed one run in one inning and Ryan Lynch allowed an unearned run over two innings of work.
 
The Comets scored first in the fourth innings when they loaded the bases with no outs. Bollinger worked out of the jam with a double play and a fly out and the run scored on the double play. UTD added a run in the sixth inning on an RBI singles by Trevor Clifton and Easterling.
 
The Cowboys added a run in the seventh inning when Jon Finney tripled home Jason Vause and another in the eight on a pinch-hit RBI single by Zack Patino with two outs.
 
Finney led the Cowboys with two hits in game two and Jacob Price had a pair of hits for UTD.
 
HSU is now 12-7 on the year and UTD is 11-10. HSU will return to action Friday when it opens a three-game American Southwest Conference series against two-time defending champion Concordia at 7 p.m. at Hunter Field.
