By the fourth inning, the Badgers and Mavericks were tied at six a piece. In the bottom half of the frame Merkel would take a one run lead at 7-6.
In the top of the fifth, Merkel would get key defensive contributions by their catcher Johnny Cuellar.
A throw by Cuellar would start a "pickle" that would result in an Eastland runner being thrown out at first base for Merkel's first out.
A short time later Cuellar would turn a strikeout into a double play by picking off a runner at third base.
That would send the game into the bottom of the fifth, and that's when Merkel would bring four more runners across the plate.
In the end that would prove to be the difference, as Merkel picked up a 11-7 victory over Eastland.
