ABILENE, Texas
-- Hardin-Simmons' softball team
swept Sul Ross State 2-0 and 2-1 in American Southwest Conference action at
Ellis Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Cowgirls swept the
four-game series and improved to 6-15-1 overall and 4-4 in league play. The
Lobos fell to 5-13 overall and 0-4 in conference play. HSU is off for two weeks
before playing at Schreiner on Thursday and Friday of Easter week.
Game 1
Brittany Acosta fired
a three-hit shutout to win her third game of the weekend and improve to 4-8 on
the year. Acosta walked just one batter and struck out three.
The Cowgirls scored
single runs in the first and second innings. In the first inning, Sarah Truelove
singled and stole second base and scored on a Mac Clay RBI single.
In the second inning,
Shelby McIntyre double to lead off the inning and scored on a one-out double by
Ashten Huddleston. That was all of the offense either team would have the rest
of the way.
Alexandra Galvan fell
to 1-5 with the loss as she allowed two runs on six hits. Three different Lobos
had hits. Six different Cowgirls had one-hit each.
Game
2
The Cowgirls had to
rally for an exciting walkoff win in game two.
Carol Swindell pitched
her best game as a Cowgirl as she went seven innings and scattered six hits and
one run and struck out six to improve to 2-7.
Sul Ross scored its
lone run of the day in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Shelby Doederlein.
The Lobos were threatening for more in the sixth inning when Samantha Menchaca
and Christina Graham had back-to-back infield singles, put the Cowgirls got out
of the jam on a triple play as Amanda Garza lined to Clay at second base and she
threw to second for one out and Jayton Gordon fired to first for the triple
play.
HSU tied the game in
the bottom of the sixth as Truelove led off with a single and moved to second on
a Sydnie Darden sacrifice bunt. Clay singled in Truelove to make it
1-1.
In the bottom of the
seventh McIntyre led off with a double and moved to third on a pinch-hit single
by Julia Bradley. McIntyre was then thrown out at home on a fielder's choice and
Truelove came up and drove home Bradley for the game winner.
Truleove had three
hits for the Cowgirls and Keri McShan had two hits to pace SRSU. McShan also
took the loss in the circle allowing two runs on eight hits in six and two-third
innings.
