School Safety in AISD

When dropping off their child at school parents say that safety is a concern they have.

Michelle Fletcher has two children in the Abilene School District and says, school is like their second parent, when she drops her children off she expects them to be safe just as they are at home.

Ricardo Gutierrez also has two children in AISD and says that although they are doing a good job in keeping students safe they could always do better.

Charles Perkins, Assistant Superintendent for Operations says, "we live in a different time where most of us were raised and so safety on our campus has become a much larger issue."

AISD has been doing numerous things to ensure the safety of all on school grounds. Campuses hold intruder drills, fire/disaster/bus evacuations, there are cameras on buses, crossing guards, School Resource Officers, a visitors management system that scans visitor’s identification cards, and also have a Crime Stopper Hotline.

After a recent study, AISD Officials say an area of focus is the access visitors and strangers have on school campuses. They say more needs to be done to keep students safe and have only identified visitors on school property. Although AISD is always trying to find a better way to keep students, parents, and staff members safe they say they feel good about the school district being safe.

"As we all would, as school principals, school teachers, and as parents we are all concerned with the safety of our kiddos, so we are trying to make that better at every place but we feel good about our district," said Perkins.
