Mattel, Fisher-Price Pay $12M

The world's largest toymakers have reached a $12 million settlement with 38 states, including Texas, over lead-tainted toys.

Texas receives $379,879 under the settlement.

“Today’s agreement protects young Texans by helping to ensure that popular children’s toys do not contain excessive, unlawful amounts of lead,” Attorney General Abbott said in a press release.

The tainted toys sparked a health scare in 2007.

Mattel recalled more than 18 million Chinese-made toys over hazards connected with magnets and lead paint.  The maximum lead content allowed under federal law is 600 parts per million (ppm).  Some of the toys tested for lead levels over 50,000 ppm in the surface paint.

Lead paint can lead to brain damage or even death if it is ingested.
