USPS Shipping Rates Increasing

Updated: January 2, 2009
Shipping a package through the post office will cost you a little more starting later this month.  The U.S. Postal Service will raise prices on all shipping services by an average of 5 percent starting Sunday, January 18th.  The price changes will include Express Mail, Priority Mail, Parcel Select, Parcel Return Service and some international shipping products.

The move to annual January price changes for shipping services products is consistent with industry-wide practice, and provides a clear picture of the competitive, affordable prices the Postal Service offers,” said Robert Bernstock, president, Mailing and Shipping Services. “The new prices are very competitive within the shipping industry and reinforce the value Postal Service pricing offers our customers,” Bernstock said. “As always, the Postal Service does not impose fuel surcharges, hidden surcharges or surcharges for residential delivery or Saturday delivery. "

Stamps are not affected by this price increase. A first class stamp is still 42-cents, but the postal service will decide next month if that price will increase.
