Driving around Texas, you might have seen D.P.S. Troopers walking around a stretch of highway laying tape measures, and and using strange looking instruments to take measurements. These Troopers are members of an elite D.P.S. unit known as the Accident Reconstruction Team.
There are 14 D.P.S. districts in Texas, and each district has its own team which consists of 7 to 10 Troopers who have completed specialized training in accident investigation.
Troopers work tediously using trigonometry and physics to determine the circumstances and contributing factors which lead to a fatal crash.
Due to normal traffic, the work is dangerous, and Troopers must have each others back.
The investigation is made much more efficient with cooperation from the Texas Department of Transportation.
Troopers advise drivers who come in contact with a team while driving to slow down, keep eyes on the road, and follow the instructions given by Troopers working the scene.
Reports generated by the D.P.S. Accident Reconstruction Teams are commonly used in court to establish cause and responsibility in collision cases.
