Cody Vaughan,23, and Scott Porter,23, are walking across the country, not only
to fulfill a dream but also to raise awareness. Vaughan says he is
walking for Doctors with out Borders, an organization of doctors that
travel to third world countries to provide aid for those in need.Vaughan and Porter started walking in San Diego on November 3, 2008, and the pair want to make it to Southern Georgia or Florida. They say each day they try to walk about 30 miles.
The two friends stopped in Abilene to buy new shoes. The last time the young men bought new shoes was when they walked through Phoenix.
Vaughan and Porter do not stay in hotels, instead they try to find places to lie out their sleeping bags. Both have so many stories to tell and Porter describes a night they wont forget.
The two were sleeping in a small trailer that was on top of a flatbed when they wore awakened by the sound of a semi-truck. Not thinking anything of it, they went back to bed. It was not until they started to hear the noise get louder and realized a truck cab was backing up to hitch unto the flatbed, next thing they knew the flatbed was raising and they were still in the trailer. The pair dumped all their belongings out of the door and jumped out. They say it was quite an alarm clock that morning and had them high alert the first 15 miles of their day.
Vaughan and Porter are now off to their next city and state, meeting new people, seeing new sites, and enjoying their life out on the open road.
If you would like to follow their journey, Cody Vaughan's sister keeps a blog about her brother's traveling experiences at www.codywalks.blogspot.com
