Focus on Faith:Diocese Honors Abilene Priest

Several Abilene Catholics are being honored by Bishop, Michael Pfeifer, of the diocese in San Angelo.

With almost 40 years of service, Father Robert Bush of Sacred Heart Catholic Church here in Abilene will be among that group.

Priest, Robert Bush, or, Father Bob, as he is known to most, certainly fits the mold of humble servant.

"The bishop just called and said that he wanted to do this," states Father Bob.

"An acknowledgment of services that I have performed for the diocese; he said I know that you are not looking for this."

Even though he might not have been looking for it, officials with the Catholic church could not help but notice the good work Father Bob was doing, so they have honored him with the Papal Medal, a distinguished honor within the faith.

But, Father Bob, did not start his works in faith for high honors or awards.

"Just being able to seem to make a difference in people's lives and help people and of course the prayer life too," says Father Bush.

Even though Bush was assigned to the Big Country, Father Bob, has found a home here in Abilene.

Its a community that has welcomed him with open arms.

"Some people have said that they are struck by the love of people here," Father Bush relates, "that something hits them here they feel the presence of God."

"Others come and they leave the same way that they came."

"There has to be some openness on the part of the person for them to experience something."

As lucky as Father Bob feels to be in town, his congregation feels even luckier to have him.

And with this high honor, it becomes clear that officials among his church feel the same way.

Father Bush, and 25 others will be honored this Friday in San Angelo.
