Keep Abilene Beautiful kicks off a contest aimed towards getting children involved in school beautification projects.

"Of course you have McGruff the crime dog, you have Sparky the dalmation, and so I was just trying to get things out there that was different," MaryAnn Martin, with Keep Abilene Beautiful said.

But, why a skunk?

"Actually, the fact that you see so many out on the roads in Abilene. There's a lot of skunks around Abilene. And I think they're cute," MaryAnn Martin added.

The competition was started to raise awareness about recycling.

Schools are already getting excited about.

"I think it's gunna be exciting. We are a competitive campus so we like to compete for things. This is a great project. It's really for campus beautification and a chance to earn some money to win some money to help beautify our campus," Kari Leong, Principal of Jane Long Elementary said.

So when will the skunk finally be named?

"February 20th and then the board is going to look at the names, vote on one and in March, they're going to announce the winner," MaryAnn Martin said.

And the winner not only gets to name the skunk but also wins $1,000.

"There's gunna be a special ceremony. The money will be given to the schools. We're going to have a Keep Abilene Beautiful plaque there at the school," MaryAnn Martin added.

And now you're wondering where the skunk will be...
 
"In schools, artwalk, parades, certain functions like we have the trash off, pretty soon in April, you'll see the skunk there.

The skunk will be making it's debut at this month's Artwalk scheduled for February 12th.
