Deadline Soon for Tuition Promise Fund

By: RNS
Updated: February 9, 2009
Time is running out for parents to enroll in the state's new prepaid college tuition program.

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs says the Texas Tuition Promise Fund's current enrollment period ends February 28th. The program allows families to lock in college tuition and required fees at current prices of Texas public colleges and offers flexible payment options.

Families enrolled in the Texas Tuition Promise Fund purchase tuition "units" with three levels of pricing to prepay undergraduate resident tuition and required fees.

Prices range from about 99-dollars per unit for the most expensive Texas public four-year college to about 17-dollars per unit for a two-year school.

Officials say 100 units equal one year of tuition and required fees, based on 30 credit hours.

Nearly 5,000 children have already been enrolled in the program since enrollment began last September.

Once the current enrollment period ends, the state will survey colleges and universities for their future tuition and fees to set new contract prices.
