2008 was a better year for Abilene, as the overall crime rate dropped according the stats that were recently released by the Abilene Police Department.

Many of the big crimes dropped here in Abilene.

Crimes like murder, aggravated assault, and burglary were all on the decline.

The biggest drop came in auto theft where it dropped over 23 percent from 2007 to 2008.

However, there were several alarming trends on the rise.

DWI's jumped significantly from the previous year, as did robberies in the Abilene area; but, overall the police are feeling good about the trends from '08.

For this coming year, Police hope to see Abilene improve in the DWI numbers; hoping that drivers will make smarter and safer choices.
