Man Commits Suicide After Routine Traffic Stop

Statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety:

On Friday evening, February 13, at 7:25 pm., a Texas Highway senior trooper was working routine patrol on US Hwy 180 in Stephens County near Breckenridge, Texas. The trooper attempted to stop a red 2001 Ford pickup for speeding.

After a short pursuit the pickup did pull over four miles east of Breckenridge. The driver shot himself as the trooper walked toward the pickup.

The driver was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Breckenridge by Stephens County EMS. The driver was pronounced dead at the hospital at 8:37 pm. The body will be taken to Tarrant County Medical Examiners Office. The Texas Rangers are investigating this case.
