By: Maria Oliver
Updated: February 18, 2009
The Abilene Civic Center was a sea of red today.

Community members joined today in red to promote awareness and raise money for research on heart disease, The "Go Red" luncheon provided guests with a little humor from keynote speaker, Sally Baskey; along with a silent purse auction that benefited the American Heart Association.

Frann Smith, from the Heart Association says what was most important about the luncheon was to promote awareness.

"It's an awareness time to let women know that heart disease is the number one killer of women," Smith commented, "and if we can get that message out, and they can tell their friends and their families what the risk factors are, that is the most important thing."

The luncheon was looking to raise $50,000 for research and education on heart disease.
