Changes to Wayfinding Signs

By: Brittany Pelletz
Updated: February 24, 2009
Directional signs that will soon go up throughout town will first need to be changed.

TxDot didn't approve of the proposed designs of the future signs.

TxDot felt that the red and yellow banner displayed on the bottom of signs would be distracting along highway and state roadways.

They have proposed changes to Richard Burdine, who is heading the signage project. He will be presenting the recommendations to City Council at this week's meeting.

The revised look will affect all signs, even those that are not on highways in an effort to maintain consistency throughout Abilene.

TxDot wants the signs to display some trademark, such as putting the word, "Abilene" on top of the sign to distinguish it from their signs.

City Council will have to decide what they want on the signs after they consider the recommended changes.

There is no proposed date for the sign design to be completed or even for the signs to go up.

Once the City chooses a design, over 100 signs, varying in shape and size will go up. These way-finding signs will direct tourists to various attractions around town.
