John Martinez, the current college adviser at Abilene High School, has been named director of the new high school math and science academy opening on the campus of Abilene Christian University in the fall.

Selected by a four-member panel, Martinez was one of 19 applicants considered for the position.

The Texas Education Agency awarded AISD a grant of nearly $500 thousand for the "T-STEM" academy.

The first class will consist of 100 9th graders.  Curriculum will be based on that of the New Tech Foundation, which uses project-based learning.

Martinez received his Masters of Education from Angelo State University in December of 2006.
