While everybody can relate to the theme and enjoy the singing and dancing, the real star of 'Hairspray' is the hair! 52 wigs are used on the principal characters alone and each wig has it's own understudy, incase it's not ready to go on stage one night.
On a day without an evening performance the hair supervisor will wash and restyle the hair on all the wigs, taking over 8 hours, but with the curtain going up tonight local cosmetologist were brought in to help fix these wild 60's do's.
So just how much hairspray goes into Hairspray? According Hair and Make-up Supervisor, Paul Bigot, in a single week he'll go through at least 6 hairspray bottles, and if they're in a city with a lot of humidity that number will go up. "Human hair has bad hair days and so do wigs!" says Bigot.
Many of the wigs are made from human hair and are relatively light, but several of the wigs, including the ones used in the finale can weigh up to 3 pounds. Try doing a 60's head bob with 3 pounds sitting on your head!
