A massive wildfire in Mulberry Canyon in western Taylor County broke out Thursday afternoon. Smoke could be seen for miles, flames reached 150 feet into the air, and ash was carried by the wind for 50 miles. At about 1:45 Thursday afternoon something caused the first spark. After a slow start, the flames exploded from 40 acres to more than a thousand acres in an hour.
First volunteer firemen rolling up asked for as much help as they could get.
The smoke looked more like a spring storm cloud formation by the time it reached Abilene.
