Texas Independence Day: Take the Quiz

Texans are celebrating their Independence Day today.

On March 2nd in 1836, while the Battle of The Alamo still raged in San Antonio, the Texas Declaration of Independence was adopted 175 miles away at Washington-On-The-Brazos.  That began the ten-year life-span of the Texas Republic during which Texas was a sovereign nation before joining the United States in 1846.

Over the weekend, at the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historical Site, reenactors wearing mid-19th-century costumes, stepped back in time to help visitors understand the historic significance of Texas independence and that six-page Declaration signed by Sam Houston and 58 others.

Texas Independence Day is considered a public holiday in Texas, although state offices are expected to stay open for business.
