Drought Continues To Dry Area Lakes

By: Chris Whited, KRBC Meteorologist
Updated: March 2, 2009
Big Country lakes continue to slowly dry up as many areas end another month with drought conditions. Lake Abilene near Buffalo Gap has dropped over a half a foot in the last month. The lake is now running five feet below the spillway.

Lake Brownwood is also running at the same deficit level. Lake Fort Phantom Hill, at the moment, is seeing the least impacts from the dry pattern. The lake is over two and a half feet below the spillway.

The U.S.G.S. Water Watch is still indicating that stream flows along the area rivers and creeks is unseasonably low.

Lakes & Feet Below Spillways (as of 3-2-09)
Lake Fort Phantom Hill - 2.6 Feet
Lake Abilene - 5.0 Feet
Lake Stamford - 3.9 Feet
Lake Hubbard - 4.7 Feet
Lake Brownwood - 5.0 Feet
Lake Ivie - 16.2 Feet
Lake Sweetwater - 4.2 Feet
