Texas homeowners pay the highest insurance rates in the nation according to a new survey released earlier this week. The study from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners shows that Texans pay an average premium of about $1,409 a year.  This is higher than the nationwide average of about $804 a year. The state saw an increase of about 2.7-percent in average premiums.

The survey noted that several other states are not too far behind the Lone Star State such as Florida at $1,386 and Louisiana at $1,257 a year for an average premium. The figures in the study were from data collected in 2006, the most recent year figures were available.
