Barbara Bush Recovers from Heart Surgery

By: RNS
Updated: March 5, 2009
Barbara Bush is recovering following open-heart surgery yesterday afternoon in Houston. Doctors replaced the 83-year-old former first lady's aortic valve.

Her surgeon says the procedure "went extremely well" and expects her to make a full recovery.

"She's a remarkable woman as you know, and a tremendous strength of mindset and she woke up from the surgery joking with us," said Dr. Gerald Lawrie. "That's not that common."

Mrs. Bush is expected to remain in the hospital for up to ten days. Her husband, former President George H.W. Bush, was said to be at her side.
