Many workers are losing their jobs because of an energy slump in west Texas but a joint -training program can put people on the fast-track to work in criminal justice. Western Texas College, Workforce Solutions and the Department of Criminal Justice have teamed up to provide opportunities for new jobs as correctional officers. Under the program, unemployed energy workers who qualify would be accepted in the pre-service training program through the college and department of criminal justice. Applicants would also receive financial assistance from workforce solutions for temporary housing, meals, and some travel mileage during the five week program.
Dr. Mike Dreith, the President of Western Texas College, told KRBC News "when you consider that they're only getting 60% of the people that they need in order to operate these prisons and it's a career. I mean you start at the entry level and work all the way through the system. There is an opportunity to be in an administrative role, but this training is at the front end and you have to take it.."
Another benefit is that those accepted into the program will receive a $1500 sign on bonus and begin receiving a salary and benefits with the Department of Criminal Justice. For more information you can contact Mike Thorton at 325-573-8511 or email at mthorton@wtc.edu about the program.
