By: Laura Kellerman
Updated: March 13, 2009
The economy is rough, but people around here are still spending.

Abilene sales tax figured from February are up 0.45 percent from February of last year; the number reflects a steady amount of spending but not growth.  Adding up the fiscal year-to-date numbers, revenue is up nearly a percent.

Statewide figures for last month are down 2.6 percent from February 2008.  What's paid to cities was down 0.7 percent/

“State sales tax collections declined in February as important sectors such as retail trade and construction continue to struggle,” Combs said. “While state sales tax revenue has grown 2.8 percent through the first half of fiscal 2009, further declines are expected as the economy continues to weaken.”

Below is a chart of Abilene's sales tax allocations as well as those of Brownwood and Sweetwater.
