U.S. Casualties Down in Iraq

By: RNS
Updated: March 25, 2009
U.S. combat deaths are at the lowest level since the Iraq war began six years ago.

Military spokesman Major-General David Perkins said 19 American soldiers died in combat in Iraq during January and February, a big decline from the 148 killed in that two-month period in 2007.

More than 4,200 U.S. troops have died in Iraq since the 2003 invasion. Baghdad's security spokesman said the number of militant attacks documented last week in Baghdad was at a record low.

Bombings, kidnappings and shootings, however, are still common.

Two bombings in a west Baghdad district during the past two weeks left nearly 40 people dead and dozens wounded.
