Abilene Unmployment Falls Slightly

By: Laura Kellerman
Updated: March 26, 2009
Abilene's unemployment rate fell slightly in the month of February while the Texas unemployment rate rose slightly.

An estimated 4,200 Abilenians were unemployed in January.  4,100 were unemployed in February.  That reflects a 5.0 percent rate in February and 5.1 percent rate in January.

The national unemployment rate in February was 8.9 percent and in Texas it was 6.6 percent.  Those numbers, like the ones given for Abilene, are not seasonally adjusted.

Texas Workforce Commission officials say the state's seasonally adjusted nonagricultural employment fell by 46,000 jobs last month.

TWC is intensifying its assistance to job seekers as the unemployment rate continues to rise.  Work searches, skills training and other services are available at workforce centers across the state.
