Lawmakers Pass Hard DWI Legislation

By: RNS
Updated: March 31, 2009
State lawmakers passed two bills yesterday dealing with DWIs.

The first permits police more authority to have blood drawn or get breath samples from those suspected of driving while intoxicated if they have previous convictions.

That bill was named for 13-year-old Nicole Lalime who was killed by a drunk driver. The Senate approved a measure to let police officers establish sobriety checkpoints. Until now, Texas was among eleven states that prohibited such set ups.

Both bills are now on the way to the House where they will be debated and another vote taken.
