The Texas state Senate approved $182 billion for a new budget. The allocation for 2010-11 includes controversial explanations in the way funds can be used for stem cell studies.
Senators also said continued economic predicaments could mean alternations in the future. Finance Committee Chairman Steve Ogden had previously said money could not be used to support research that destroyed human embryos.
Yesterday, he modified his statement to say the restriction applies only to studies funded by state budget money.
Senator Kirk Watson was not impressed, and is concerned about what influence the provision will have on researchers.
A vote of 26-to-5 proved to be another big step in approving a final budget.
