With the recent windy weather across the Big Country it's a good chance you're got  trash and other things blown across your neighborhood. This weekend is the perfect time to get out and do a little spring cleaning!

Texans produce about 29-million tons of trash per year and much of it ends up along our neighborhood streets and even in our parks. The 90-day Great Abilene Clean-Up kicks off this weekend and you can make a difference by taking time to volunteer and pick up litter in our community.

Carolyn Cockerell, the president of Keep Abilene Beautiful tells KRBC News that "we are very excited! Keep Abilene Beautiful wants to welcome and invite everyone in the community, surrounding areas as well of course, to our big kickoff this weekend which is this Saturday. It's a beautification, springtime event for Keep Abilene Beautiful. This weekend is our Trash-Off."

She says everyone is welcome to help out. Volunteers should be at the K-Mart parking lot at 8:30 on Saturday morning for registration. Then your group will be assigned a designated area for cleaning in the city. Trash bags and grabbers will be provided for use. Recycling containers will also be at the location for recyclable items volunteers may find along the roadways. You can even get your chance to meet Pepe ReNew, the new mascot of Keep Abilene Beautiful.

"With warm weather this year it ought to be a fun family event. Why not support Abilene and come out and have a good time to boot," noted Cockerell. The Tony Barker Musicians are going to hold a special salsa event at Play Faire Park Saturday afternoon to thank volunteers for cleaning up Abilene.

Even if you live in Breckenridge, Sweetwater or Brownwood you can still help out the environment this weekend. Don't Mess With Texas will hold thier annual state-wide Trash-Off this Saturday as well. All you have to do is find a highway and pick up some trash.
