People waste more water in the bathroom than any other place in the home. That's why greening your bathroom is so important. There are many things you can do to green your bathroom.
Rob Schroeder with Home Depot told our crew that "it's not just a mindset. It's something you want to do for yourself. It does touch your pocketbook." We waste a great deal of water in the shower. If you want to save water and money install a low-flow shower head. "It's reducing the amount of water but most of the new ones are giving you such a nice pattern.
The low flow is actually the amount of water per minute you're actually putting through that valve," explained Schroeder. A high efficiency toilet could also save a lot of water. A family of four could save more than 16,000 gallons a year. "You use a toilet that is flushing with 1.28 gallons per flush.
That's big savings." The way you clean your bathroom can also impact the environment. Many commercial cleaners contain harsh chemicals. Look for green cleaning supplies or use more natural products. "The cleaning products are a gigantic area. There's a whole line now of these green products that are excellent bathroom cleaners, degreasers, mildew, mold removers. They're all a new green product." A leaky faucet is another big water waster. A little drip can waste nearly three thousand gallons a year.
