Citing staff errors, the Republican Senator says taxpayer money was improperly used to pay for about five thousand dollars in hotel expenses over the past ten years.
"I was unaware of routine staff work over the course of several years where we may have made mistakes," Lugar said Wednesday. "I'm sorry that I was not more observant."
According to POLITICO, Lugar also used his Senate office account to pay roughly seventy thousand dollars in other hotel costs throughout his 35-year career. However, those expenses were allowed because the Senate was in session at the time.
Lugar has come under fire recently from his opponents over his residency. They say the Senator has lived outside the state since 1977. Lugar responded this week with an add in which calls the criticism, "Mickey Mouse" attacks.
