AUSTIN, TX. -- Texas State Senator Kel Seliger is one of the contenders for chair of the State Senate Education Committee.

KAMR NBC4's Morgan Schutters spoke with Seliger, who says it's a position he would love to have; to help make sure future generations are given what they need to succeed.

That's in your local election headquarters.

Texas Senator Kel Seliger says to chair the Texas Senate Education Committee is a serious job.

He says nearly 5 million children are in our state's public education system, and education is always the most important issue.

"We always deal with this as the largest single part of the budget and we're preparing children to lead this state in the future so they must be well prepared!" Seliger says.

He says decisions for education are the most important part of his job.

Seliger's served on finance and education committees, and says he knows the problems facing public schools.

"We should not go in and try to run the school system but we need to know what the problems are and the tools they need and the help the legislature can be to the public schools,"  Seliger says.

It's up to the Lieutenant Governor to appoint the new committee chair.
This after current chair Florence Shapiro announced she will not seek re-election.

"We all want our children to grow up in an even better state than we grew up," Seliger says.

Other contenders for the position include Houston Republican Dan Patrick.

This week, Senator Seliger visited several Texas public schools to observe the administering of the STAAR tests to students.
