Madison, Wis. (WFRV)-- Your Local Election Headquarters is getting you ready for next Tuesday's Primary in the Governor Walker Recall by profiling all four of the Democratic candidates.
Thursday, Local 5's Chelly Boutott sat down with Doug La Follette in Madison.
On his plan to "Let's Make Wisconsin Work Again" and creating jobs
"We have to invest in education, University research, infrastructure repairs, get things done in Wisconsin, to our parks, to our bridges, to our sewage treatment plants, water treatment. That all needs to be done and it provides jobs at the same time. It makes good sense."
On Collective Bargaining
"I support Collective Bargaining. But I don't believe in trying to do it by getting in peoples face by threatening to veto budgets and calling Special Sessions. We have to sit down with all sides and discuss the best way of getting Wisconsin working again."
A lot of people promise things and I'm very critical of my opponents for promising if they are governor they will do this or that. Governors cannot do that it takes it takes a Legislature. And what Doug La Follette is bringing to this campaign is the ability to get people to work together. I've been elected by Republicans and Democrats over the historic years and I as Governor can bring people together to get Wisconsin working again... I would represent everyone in Wisconsin and try to get us focused on many key issues including the rights of men and women to organize."
On not accepting contributions from Special Interest Groups, only individuals
"I'm not a Special Interest Politician. I don't take money from Special Interests, therefore I can represent all of the people of Wisconsin. Not just Democrats, not just Republicans but everybody."
"It's the right way, it's a better way. People are fed up with being told by Super Pac money or negative ads on TV. And they've said That for 20 years. And somebody had to step up and say I'm going to do it a better way and prove that it can be done."
" The idea behind 'Miss Forward' is to bring important issues to people's attention. And we talk about that in the little add where I basically say Wisconsin is broken and I have to wind her up and get Wisconsin working again. And that was just kind of a cute idea. But the point is not to run attack ads, not to take Special Interest money. But to work for the people of Wisconsin. And the idea behind that ad was just to say we've got a long history. If you look at the ad, working with Democrats, working with Republicans. I've been around quite awhile, there are no surprises. People know where Doug La Follette wants to take Wisconsin and that's forward."
On his 3 Key Issues to winning the election.
I think they should remember three key things. First of all I'm the best candidate to win the election because I get Republican votes as well as Democratic votes. I'll be the best Governor because I can bring people together, represent all the people of Wisconsin Republicans and Democrats-- all sides of the issues. That's what's going to be critical. And finally I am not taking Special Interest money I'm not spending millions of dollars of attack ads. I'm doing it a better way and Wisconsin needs to prove to the world that we can do it that way.
On being 71 years old and running for Governor
I urge them to keep up with me. A couple months ago I climbed a 5 thousand foot mountain and I got up there in two hours. And we have a mountain to climb here. We've got to climb out of this hole the Governor has put us in. And as say get Wisconsin working again. I would challenge anyone of my opponents to keep up with me ."
