BROWNWOOD, Texas- Both sides of the ball dominate as Howard Payne Yellow Jackets swarm Bacone College 56-7 in their home opener at Gordon Wood Stadium.

HPU held Bacone scoreless until midway through the third quarter, when the Warriors added a touchdown to make it 42-7.

Everybody got into the stat book as the first seven touchdowns where from seven different Yellow Jackets.

HPU quarterback, Zach Hubbard was the star in the game completing 82 percent of his passes, going 18-22 for 302 yards, 4 touchdowns and no interceptions. He completed a reception to 10 different receivers.

The Yellow Jacket defense ended the day with 4 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, and 3 interceptions. Defensive end, Joey Lewis had an all-around game with 7 tackles, 3 for a loss, 1 sack and an interception. Kevin Reyna led the Howard Payne in tackles with 10.

Hubbard’s first touchdown pass came on the third play HPU’s first offensive possession when he hit Brandon Young for a 79 yard screen pass to make it 7-0. HPU scored on their next two offensive possessions. Walter Pam pounded it in for a 1 yard rush to make it 14-0, and then a ten yard reception in the end zone for tight end, Trevor Kleine to take the lead 21-0.

Howard Payne’s defense wasn’t content with a 21-0 lead going into the half. Defensive back, Zach Dauer intercepted a pass and took it back 75 yards for the touchdown, with only 25 seconds left in the half.

To start the second half, it was more of the same, as Corbin Young took the return back 77 yards. Two penalties set the Jackets back, but it still wasn’t enough to stop them, when Edward Cody caught a finger-tip pass over his shoulders for a 31 yard TD reception from Hubbard. That score made it 35-0 only 17 seconds into the second half.

After the kickoff to Bacone, the next play defensive end, Joey Lewis intercepted a shovel pass. That set up a 5 play, 26 yard drive that was capped off by a 2 yard run from Lance Dickey, taking the lead 42-0.

Bacone got on the board next to end their scoreless drought, on a 12 yard pass from Shawn Walls to wide receiver, Roman Nelson in the back of the end zone.

Nine seconds inside the fourth quarter, Hubbard threw for his 4th touchdown on the day to wide receiver, Justin Havard. That drive took the most time off the clock on the day, going 8 plays, 68 yards, for 4:05 minutes.

HPU capped the day off with a 59 yard drive that ended with a 3 yard rushing touchdown from Lance Dickey giving him 2 rushing TD’s on the day.

The Yellow Jackets will be back at home next week, Sept. 26, taking on Sul Ross State University at Gordon Wood Stadium.
